XXY

Dir: Lucía Puenzo, Argentina, 2007, Digibeta, 86 mins, Spanish with English subtitles

An astonishing film which lingers in the memory, XXY explores the painful search for gender identity of Alex, a 15 year old intersex teenager. Her parents have raised her as a girl and resisted assigning sexuality by surgery so that she can choose her own destiny.

Entering adolescence, she is feeling pressured to 'choose'. A plastic surgeon has been invited to visit in the hope that he may be of help. Alex strikes up a friendship with the surgeon's son, Alvaro, and it soon emerges that they are equally confused and curious about sex, sexuality and gender. XXY represented Argentina at the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category.
