With Gilbert and George

Dir: Julian Cole, UK, 2008, Digibeta, 104 mins

"One artist, two people"

Italian Gilbert Proesch met Englishman George Passmore at London's St Martin's School of Art in 1967, forming an artistic partnership that holds to this day.

At first struggling for critical acclaim with provocative, religious and homoerotic imagery, over the years they have reached an almost iconic status. With the motto Art for all, Gilbert and George travel the world, giving more exhibitions than most contemporary artists.

Filmmaker Julian Cole first met Gilbert and George when he modelled for them in 1986. Made over 18 years, his intimate cinematic portrait describes the duo's career from its modest beginnings to their current status as high earners and stars of the art world.

"This has got to be one of the most important films ever made about an artist and contemporary art." - Ben Borthwick, Curator, Tate Modern.
