Gender Rebel

This series of documentaries explores what people’s identities mean to them when they find themselves outside society’s expectations.

Shot in a fast paced style A Girl Named Kai follows Kai and her search for love, fame and her identity across four countries.

Out of the political tumult of South Africa comes Enraged by a Picture which explores the fallout from photographer Zanele Muholi’s first solo exhibition which sought to illuminate the hidden bodies of her courageous subjects. This was her opportunity to respond to feedback generated after she took her work from the gallery to the streets.

XX to XY: Fighting to be Jake is a touching documentary using interviews, music and animation to tell of a young FTM’s courage to stand up against society, the medical system, and his own fears. It looks at his journey into a body he hopes will bring him happiness, while he struggles to find the love he hopes will make him whole.

Gender Rebel
follows the lives of three individuals seeking to shatter the confines of a traditional gender identity. They define themselves not as male or female, but something that incorporates both. Jill is breaking new ground coming out as gender-queer to her family. Kim and her girlfriend struggle to live with what Kim’s top surgery means for their individual identities. And Lauren is deciding if she’ll stay in her hometown or move to the big city to find the space to express her gender-fluid identity.
