Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story
Dir: Sean Mullens, USA, 2005, Beta SP, 84 mins
Forget your tired lip-synching-to-Judy-Garland routines; this is drag as you’ve never seen it before. Ten years ago a group of punk rock/performance art drag queens began exploding the boundaries of gender through performances at a small cabaret, known as Trannyshack, held every Tuesday night at the Stud in San Francisco. These days Trannyshack has become a religion for its regular followers. Interviews with performers including Suppositori Spelling, Heklina, Peaches Christ and The Steve Lady are punctuated by fantastic, raw lip-sync performances to music from Bauhaus, David Bowie, Patti Smith and The Black Hearts to name a few. It’s a hothouse of drag creativity that has pushed the form in every possible direction – from metal drag to belly dancing drag to high performance masochistic art.
Filthy Gorgeous the movie is an exuberant celebration of the club’s life and times with cameo appearances from Trannyshackers past and present. And we guarantee you’ll never be able to think of Snow White or her dwarves in quite the same way ever again.
