100% Human
Dir: Trond Winterkjær & Jan Dalchow, Norway, 2005, 35mm, 73 mins, Norwegian with English subtitles
A one-of-a-kind Festival must-see, 100% Human is neither 100 percent documentary nor 100 percent musical. A masterful collection of personal video diary, musical performances, and cinema verité make this unique documentary as appealing as the subject matter herself. Monica has videotaped herself over the course of a year and a half to document her MTF transition. Accompanying Monica’s candid discussions with her mother about living in her inherently flawed body are equally insightful observations made by her doctor: "A human being is like a closed box. You have to open it up to see what’s inside." This Norwegian film accentuates the uniqueness of each person’s journey, while boldly reminding us, "It’s great to be alive." (In fact, we’re encouraged to sing it!). Truthfulness, compassion, and dignity lend this film a stand-alone quality. Monica is an inspiration within a social context that juxtaposes gender with humanity; yet, as she so succinctly puts it, "Those who live a lie live a cold life." (Frameline San Francisco 2005)
