When I’m 64
Dir: Jon Jones, United Kingdom, 2004, Beta SP, 87 mins
Jim is finally leaving the school that has been his life for 50 years, first as pupil, then as teacher. In his retirement he wants to do three things: fall in love, travel and get a nose job. Well we all know how that feels. As Jim’s taxi leaves the school gates his driver, Ray, is amused by Jim at first, then interested. A tentative courtship starts, with Ray’s children and pub mates throwing in their two pennies’ worth. But Jim and Ray really ‘see’ each other, whereas those around them see only an old man and a widower – what the hell would they want in each other? Gentle, truthful performances make this BBC film a real winner. Jim, who is fussy, prissy and innocent to the world shows that vulnerability is true strength. Ray, all macho bluster, realises he has nowhere else to go except where love leads him. There’s also the bonus of a good supporting cast taking some well aimed digs at the upwardly mobile modern nuclear family. Go on, Dad is always asking what you’ve been doing lately; isn’t it time you took him to the movies?
