Saving Face
Dir: Alice Wu, USA, 2004, 35mm, 91 mins, English & Mandarin with English subtitles
Hard-working Manhattan surgeon Wil knows all about keeping up appearances. While she has made a life downtown, she spends Friday nights back under the watchful eyes of the Chinese community in Queens, evading suitable men in shiny suits. But appearances can be deceptive. Her mother (played by beautiful Joan Chen of Twin Peaks fame) has conveniently forgotten that Wil is a lesbian, and she’s hiding a secret of her own – a very unexpected pregnancy. Soon everything’s out in the open and ‘Ma’, now in disgrace with her own parents, camps out at Wil’s apartment just as Wil is falling for foxy dancer Vivian. This sweet and gentle romantic comedy is the first feature from Asian-American director Alice Wu. It reflects her own experiences but speaks more widely about the pressure to live up to family expectations and reminds us never to underestimate those we love. (London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival)
