Mariscos Beach
Dir: Olivier Ducastel, France, 2004, 35mm, 93 mins, French with English subtitles
In this charming French comedy, Marc and his wife Beatrix are spending the summer holidays with their children on the Côte d’Azur. Although the sea is still rather cool, the summer heat slowly begins to kindle the senses, and all kinds of desires. The couple’s daughter Laura can’t wait for her boyfriend to whisk her away on his motorbike. Laura’s brother Charly spends his days roaming the beach with his friend Martin, who is in love with him. Sensing the erotically-charged tension between the two boys, Beatrix starts to believe her son could be gay. Charly says nothing to deny her suspicions. Things are further complicated by the arrival of Beatrix’s lover, Matthieu. And so the summer holidays actually turn out to be rather exciting: the love lives of the various family members lead to plenty of toing and froing during the night, much slamming of doors, and long showers for some steamy self-pleasuring that drain the house’s hot water tank. Enter a hunky plumber to sort out more than the hot water. In this warm, breezy film all is sun, surf and libido. It would be a hard-hearted soul that didn’t leave the cinema with a smile on their face.
