Loggerheads
Dir: Tim Kirkman, USA, 2005, 35mm, 95 mins
In Kure Beach, North Carolina, it’s nearly a new millennium and a handsome blond stranger, Mark, has arrived in town. He has come to watch the loggerhead turtles with his night goggles as they come ashore to lay their eggs. Mark meets George, a friendly motel owner, and is offered a place to stay. In the small town of Eden a minister’s wife is forced to confront her husband’s prejudice against their estranged son because he came out as gay. Across the state, Grace, an airport car-rental agent living with her mother, quits her job and embarks on a long-delayed quest: facing the legal barriers that keep her from finding the son she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager. These three seemingly unrelated storylines converge in a very confident way, all coming together for Mother’s Day. But the children are missing.
Loggerheads is delicate, subtle, yearning, with lovely cinematography and a stellar cast. Love, relationships, the power of connection and the pain of separations are the themes elegantly played out with effective emotional force.
