The D Word
Dir: Maggie Burkle, Cherien Naffa Daibes & Noelle Brower, USA, 2005, Beta SP, 61 mins
Ever felt that
The L Word doesn’t quite represent your reality? Wondered where all the butch women are and why Shane doesn’t live next door to you? You guessed it,
The D Word is a good-natured send-up of our lesbian late night pleasure and plays on the idea that
The L Word contains no lesbians of the D(yke) variety. It is never mean-spirited, however and the characters are made fun of almost lovingly. Dot and Dina are looking for a man to father their baby. Next door there’s chess coach Dim, and his newly arrived girlfriend Dani, a playwright curious about life in New York City. Let’s not forget Daynisha, the closeted basketball player; Dixie, a bisexual journalist into S & M; Drea, who fends off the stalker-ish attention of many ardent females and Daria, the proprietor of the Drunken Pussycat. Sound familiar?
The D Word uses the viewer’s knowledge, but never panders to it, making it both inventive and laugh-out-loud funny. So, until
The L Word graces our screens again, make sure you catch this hilarious spin-off.
