Left Lane
Dir: Samantha Farinella, USA, 2004, Beta SP, 93 mins
Riotously entertaining and thought provoking at the same time,
Left Lane follows feminist-lesbian-folk-poet Alix Olson for a year as she lives her politics on the road. Named one of the ten most dangerous women in the United States by the conservative group Concerned Women for America, Olson uses poetry and music as her weapons of choice. Part concert film, part cultural revolution, filmmaker and tour manager Samantha Farinella does justice to Olson’s spoken-word poetry by providing rare insight into the mind and politics that fuel this lesbian artist-activist whose feminist poetry issues a slap in the face to the patriarchy. The film follows Olson and her team of merry bandits as they tour colleges and festivals around America encouraging independent thought and inspiring young poets. Olson’s sharp wit and humour are always at the forefront, giving the message just as much bark as it has bite.
Audience Award for Best Feature – Newfest New York Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2005
