Hilde’s Journey

Dir: Christof Vorster, Switzerland, 2004, 35mm, 90 mins, Swiss German with English subtitles

Hilde's JourneySteff Bertsch is living a mundane life. He works hard, struggles financially and occasionally gets lucky. However, when his ex-lover Martin Hilder (Hilde) dies of AIDS Steff’s life changes forever. Named sole heir to Hilde’s fortune, Steff can now fulfill his dream of starting his own business. As with all things that seem too good to be true, there’s a catch: he has to make a deal with Hilde’s controlling mother. Complicating matters considerably is Hilde’s most recent boyfriend Rex, an unpredictable and headstrong young man. Rex is determined to honour his lover’s last wish to have his ashes scattered in the Atlantic. Something that Hilde’s mother vehemently opposes. But when Rex takes matters into his own hands, he sets off a chain of events that forces Steff to re-examine both his life and his priorities. Hilde’s Journey is a story of honour and betrayal that reminds us that love, friendship and hope hold us all together even when we are faced with life’s most heartbreaking choices. All the while the film treats us to sumptuous cinematography and truly sympathetic characters who learn important messages of both tolerance and diversity.
