Good Boys
Dir: Yair Hochner, Israel, 2005, Beta SP, 75 mins, Hebrew with English subtitles
Life is complicated for three hookers, two boys and a girl, in this accomplished first feature from Israeli high school film teacher Yair Hochner. 17-year-olds Meni and Tal are asked by a client if he can watch them have sex. Later, the pair hang out together and realise they have found unexpected comfort and attraction in one another. They spend the night together and plan to meet the next day, but what a day it turns out to be. Meni is dealing with his junkie ex-girlfriend who is back on the game and trying to dump their two-year-old daughter on him. Meanwhile his fairy godmother has been mugged again and can’t pay the next installment for her sex change operation. And now he thinks he’s falling in love with Tal. But will they be able to maintain their connection? Taking place mostly over the course of one long night in Tel Aviv, this is a film of nervous, almost panicky energy. Tough, gritty and unflinching,
Good Boys says that love is a real state of emergency.
