We see the three young roommates – the Just Out of the Closet Guy, the Hustler and the Mad For It Teenager, their sex lives and their love for each other in this nuclear reactor family. The main character, X, is a hustler with morals, "a whore who is not a slut" who must always win every situation and live to regret it. We watch him slowly unknot himself and be ready to risk everything for Andrew, the one man who disapproves of his lifestyle. Along for the ride is Joey – 18 years old, horny as hell and feeling over the hill. There are some wonderful, complicated storylines about how one generation of gay men look out for another with wisdom created from their own pain, and how families love their gay sons with patience and curiosity. This film teases the audience, taking gay film conventions and dismissing them with a great sense of fun. Boy Culture is also a compassionate, tender and credible portrait of modern gay life, turning all our closely held ironies and contradictions upside down and celebrating us when we are at our most subversive – loving another man.
