A Swiss Rebel is based on newly discovered archival material that provides a window not only on Schwarzenbach, but on queer and anti-Fascist artists in Europe just before WWII. The film is also a psychological study of a complex and talented woman plagued by her own demons, including a nasty heroin habit. Torn between the constraints of her conservative, aristocratic family, and her own radical politics Annemarie wrote about queer identity long before it was fashionable.
