Dir: Marco Kreuzpaintner, Germany, 2004, 35mm, 98 mins, German with English subtitles
The Out Takes programmers’ pick for festival favourite this year, Summer Storm is a fantastic crowd-pleaser. The boys and girls of a Bavarian rowing club are striving for victory at the national summer camp rowing championships. Tobi and Achim, best friends and leaders of the boys’ team, are dating Anke and Sandra from the girls’ team ... only, the night before the bus leaves for camp Tobi gets stoned with Achim and kisses him. On arrival our heroes find their main rivals are an all-gay (and very butch) team from Berlin, which causes a hilarious series of unexpected challenges for both teams. When Tobi and Achim’s friendship starts to unravel, Tobi is instead drawn into the tender arms of gay oarsman Leo and hidden desires float messily to the surface, hearts are hurt and romance blossoms in Summer Storm.
