THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF HOMOSEXUAL AUSTRALIA
Dir: Con Anemogiannis, Australia, 2004, Beta SP, 84 mins
Was Ned Kelly queer? You may find yourself wondering after viewing this lively, fascinating history of our queer neighbours. Such is the influence of Mardi Gras that it risks overshadowing what came before: a long and diverse gay and lesbian tradition in the lucky country. Hidden History includes rare and highly entertaining silent footage of ‘passing women’ who dressed and lived as men (and some of whom married several times!). From the tragic stories of 19th Century convicts imprisoned for sodomy, to the proud exuberance of the Gay Games in Sydney, this revelatory film dispels any myths that homosexuality is somehow a ‘new thing’ – leaving us to consider how far we have come.
