GRANDE ÉCOLE
Dir: Robert Salis, France, 2003, 35mm, 110 mins, French with English subtitles
Sex, class, and race collide in this complex coming-of age drama. The children of France’s most privileged and powerful families are trained to become the nation’s leaders at private schools known as Grandes Écoles. At one such school students Paul, Bernard and Louis- Arnault find themselves enmeshed in emotional and sexual power games when Paul, although already involved with a girlfriend, becomes attracted to both Louis- Arnault and to Mecir, a lower-class Arab school employee. Desires shift amongst the strikingly attractive young men, various girlfriends, and most significantly between Paul and Mecir. Grande École is both a moving encounter with a group of young people learning about life and an intensely sensual, homoerotic tale of the intersections of power, sexuality, class and race in relationships.
