BUTTERFLY
Dir: Yan Yan Mak, Hong Kong, 2004, 35mm, 124 mins, Cantonese with English subtitles
30-something Flavia seems to have it all: a wonderful husband, beautiful apartment and perfect baby. However, a chance encounter with carefree, 20-something singer Yip reawakens a memory of a tragic lesbian love affair. Although deeply attracted to the woman, Flavia tries to concentrate on her job and family, reminding herself how precious everything she possesses is. But things cannot be stopped. Flavia comes to realise how enclosed her world is and that she has to face the feelings buried deep in her heart, including those for her old lover, Jin. Butterfly cuts between the past – the time of the pro-democracy movement in China, and the present. Flavia must confront her past and make a choice. But can she leave her perfect life to make a new one with this young woman?
