BROTHER TO BROTHER
Dir: Rodney Evans, USA, 2004, 35mm, 94 mins
Perry Williams is a gay black art student living in New York City. He’s got a promising future, but is nonetheless ambivalent about success in a white dominated world of privilege. One day he meets Bruce Nugent, an elderly neighbourhood character whose name Perry recognises as a leader of the legendary Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s. A gay painter and poet himself, Bruce shares vivid stories of an artistic circle that included Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston and was active during a time of creative integrity, unabashed gay sexuality and great pride. Perry begins to recognise this era is part of his personal history and is empowered with a stronger sense of identity and purpose.
