TOUCH OF PINK
Dir: Ian Iqbal Rashid, 2003, Canada, 35mm, 91 mins
Touch Of Pink is a glorious confection: part culture-clash romantic comedy, part 1960s Doris Day film with an Indian cast, it simultaneously sends up and celebrates the Hollywood comedies of a bygone era. Ismaili Muslim Alim lives in London with his English boyfriend Giles happily enough, until his mother, Nuru, comes to visit from Toronto, sending him into sexuality panic. Will he come out to her? Guess not. Instead he looks to his imaginary friend Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan in a dead-on impersonation) for some relationship advice. His advice is useless: stay closeted and pretend Giles is just a friend. With a family wedding in the offing, Nuru has a secret plan to take Alim back to Canada to marry a nice Muslim girl. In this year of the gay wedding, this is the film to see to plan your nuptials – pheasant samosas, anyone?
