YOU’LL GET OVER IT
Dir: Fabrice Cazeneuve, France, 2002, Beta SP, 90 mins, French with English subtitles
Charming, cute, and the captain of the swim team, Vincent seemingly has it all. He’s a good student, athletic, and his pretty girlfriend Noémie is everyone’s envy. But Vincent has a secret. He likes Noémie well enough but is really attracted to boys – especially to Benjamin, a mysterious new kid in the neighbourhood. When classmates see them kiss one day after school, Vincent finds himself in the deep end. His parents and girlfriend are stunned, his brother openly hostile. Ostracised from the gym, he is forced to face prejudice and ridicule head on, with the support of his coach and best friend. The film is a refreshing, entertaining look at teenage sexual exploration. In an endearing and cheer-raising climax, Vincent proves ultimately that given a little help you really can get over it – and find love and respect to boot.
