RISE ABOVE: THE TRIBE 8 DOCUMENTARY
Dir Tracy Flannigan, 2003, USA, Beta SP, 80 mins
You don’t have to like punk to be blown away by this groundbreaking, all women, all queer hard core outfit! Offensive to some and thrilling to many more, Tribe 8 formed in the early 90s, strapping on dildos and tearing off their shirts in a daring and raucous celebration of dyke punk. The film chronicles hilarious live performances alongside candid moments in their lives at work and on the road. It reveals the personal triumphs, political agendas and wry humour of the band members, almost all of whom are in recovery from one form of substance abuse or another. Perhaps most revealing and touching are the interviews with lead singer Lynnee Breedlove alongside her chainsmoking, battleworn and very proud mother. Don’t miss it!
