THE LIFE AND TIMES OF COUNT LUCHINO VISCONTI
Dir: Adam Low, UK, 2002, Beta SP, 106 mins
This sumptuous documentary explores the extraordinary life of the great Italian director Luchino Visconti, creator of
Death in Venice, The Damned and The Leopard. Gay aristocrat and Marxist, immensely rich and a bit of a dilettante, he was unquestionably one of the greatest film directors of the 20th Century. An artful blending of archival footage, clips from his films and surprisingly candid interviews with family and friends (including Charlotte Rampling, Farley Granger, and his protégés and lovers Helmut Berger and Franco Zeffirelli), yields perhaps the richest and most comprehensive portrait of this complex, brilliant man whose work remains profoundly influential.
‘Oh what a film! The whole thing runs like some exquisite piece of opera – a masterpiece’ – Independent on Sunday
