THE LEGEND OF LEIGH BOWERY
Dir: Charles Atlas, 2001, UK/USA/France, Beta SP, 83 mins
An affectionate and revealing portrait of one of the most outrageous figures of the 1980s, Atlas’s film is a fitting tribute to a personality that was both elusive and fascinating. Fashion designer, artist’s muse and general provocateur Bowery moved from the comfortable but puritanical suburbs of Melbourne to the cultural hive that was London. Although the public aspects of Bowery’s life are well known, it is the more personal details explored in this documentary that make it a fascinating experience; how Bowery was a brilliant pianist, how his rampant appetite for sex with businessmen in public toilets perhaps masked his desire for a loving relationship; and how his strict religious upbringing may have promoted his rebellion and exploration of all that was proscribed by Christianity. These are all issues that are explored with dignity in Atlas’s film making it a riveting and poignant experience. (London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival)
