WELLINGTON THU 10 JUN, 8.30PM, PARAMOUNT ENTERTAINING MR SLOANEDir: Douglas Hickox, UK, 1969, 35mm, 90 mins
Beryl Reid (The Killing of Sister George) is a riot as the sex-starved, self-delusional sister, Harry Andrews is her homosexual leather-fetished brother and Peter McEnery (Victim) is the handsomely menacing hustler. After the tartish Reid picks up the young man at the public library and brings him home, a farcical and eminently scandalous power struggle ensues between the siblings as they vie for the affections and appendages of the young stud… the scintillating Orton dialogue remains intact, resulting in this superbly acted and boldly original rendition of this masterpiece by one of Britain’s most daring playwrights. (Images in the Dark) Entertaining Mr Sloane was Joe Orton’s first play, beginning as an experimental production at the Arts Theatre Club, London, in 1964… It won the London Evening Standard award for best play by a new dramatist, transferred to the West End for a long and successful run, and reached New York the following year. Audiences were shocked – and amused – by the prim dialogue contrasted with violent and outrageous action. A black comedy, dripping with sexual innuendo.
