DIE, MOMMIE, DIE!
Dir: Mark Rucker, USA, 2003, 35mm, 90 mins
Drag diva Charles Busch plays fallen pop idol Angela Arden in this hilarious spoof of ‘women’s pictures’ of the 40s and 50s. She spends her days drinking, lording it over her surly daughter and permanently-stoned son while carrying on an affair with a tennis pro gigolo, Tony Parker (Jason Priestly), who’s also sleeping with her daughter. And her son. When her husband discovers the affair, she murders him with a poisoned suppository. Or does she? A wild mixture of whodunit and double-crossing ensues. Busch practically channels Joan Crawford, Lana Turner and Bette Davis all at once and wears some truly fabulous gowns while he’s doing it. So completely does he disappear into Angela’s persona that you forget it’s a man under that flamboyant red wig.
Die, Mommie, Die! is trashy, campy, full of B-movie references and absolutely fabulous!
