Welcome to Out Takes 2004 Wellington

My Mother Likes WomenHere at Reel Queer we’ve done our utmost to present an amazing range of feature film, documentary and short film marvels from around the world for your viewing pleasure! Our aim is to give queer New Zealanders access to films that reflect the diversity of our own lives and connect us to queer communities around the world. Remember that mainstream cinemas and TV in this country would not normally screen these films – they’re too queer!

Civil unions, gay marriage, gay parenting, gays and lesbians in the police and military – these are hot topics, and this year’s outstanding selection of documentaries is an antidote for the negativity and distortion present in today’s political and social climate. We recommend Paternal Instinct, Late Wedding, No Secret Anymore! and Gay Cops: Pride Behind The Badge if you need uplifting.

Gone, But Not ForgottenThis is a great year for queer romance where ‘boy does get boy’ and ‘girl gets girl’ – so be sure to book early for this year’s sure-fire hits Eating Out, Latter Days, My Mother Likes Women and our funny and charming Irish opening night film Goldfish Memory.

We continue our successful retrospective screenings with a reprise of both Desert Hearts and Entertaining Mr Sloane. These are rare opportunities for you to see classic gay and lesbian cinema brought to life on the big screen!

Desert HeartsOut Takes has reached an important milestone – 2004 is our tenth festival since we started in 1995. Reel Queer wants to acknowledge Creative New Zealand, the Paramount, and our regular filmgoers, without whose support Out Takes would not have grown to become the largest New Zealand queer cultural event with a presence in all four main centres.

Do make the most of this opportunity to catch up with friends in a queer-friendly space and, of course, to enjoy these wonderful films.
