YOSSI & JAGGER
Dir: Eytan Fox, 2002, Israel, 35mm, 71 mins, Hebrew and English subtitles
Five minutes into
Yossi & Jagger, two Israeli soldiers out on patrol are kissing and cuddling on a snowy hillside somewhere near the Lebanese border. Is there snow in Israel? Are there queers in the Israeli Army? Based on the true story of two commanders who are carrying on a passionate but discreet affair at a remote outpost,
Yossi & Jagger has proved to be one of the most popular recent films in Israel. The film makes neither pro nor anti statements about the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Instead, it is a moving portrait of the lives of young people trapped in a dangerous situation they don’t necessarily support. The Israeli Defence Force did not cooperate with the filmmakers, fearing it would be a subversive film about desire between men in uniform. Well, it is – but this is also a profoundly anti-war film.
