GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS

Dir: Richard Day, 2003, USA, 35mm, 82 mins

Girls Will Be GirlsWarning: you are now leaving PC territory. This camp, crude send up of Valley of the Dolls and All About Eve has a snappy, imaginative script, and truly outstanding performances. Jack Plotnick (Gods and Monsters) is Evie Harris, a hatchet-faced hag who drinks all day to blot out the pain of her collapsed acting career. Long-suffering roommate Coco Peru (Trick) dreams of reuniting with the spunky doctor who performed the abortions of her youth. When ingénue actress Varla Jean Merman arrives to ‘make it in Hollywood’, the stage is set for a clash of bitchy egos. If you feel a little guilty laughing at all the crass humour, just remember Varla’s timeless advice: ‘Feelings are like treasures. So bury them’.

‘Hilarious, terrific, fearless!’ – Los Angeles Times
