THE CHILD I NEVER WAS
Kai S. Pieck, 2002, Germany, 35mm, 83 mins, German with English subtitles
Superbly acted and compelling,
The Child I Never Was is an emotional journey into the dark reaches of a troubled mind. Based on original letters and statements by convicted child-murderer, Juergen Bartsch, this film paints the chilling portrait of an adolescent who craves our sympathy, a charming beast who strikes an unsettling chord in our hearts. From 1962, when he was just 15 years old, to 1966, Bartsch abused, tortured, and killed four schoolboys in Germany. The director skilfully interweaves Bartsch’s mesmerising confession with powerful re-enactments of his inexplicable crimes, severe home life, years at a Catholic boarding school, and his discovery of a sexual attraction to boys. But it is Bartsch’s desperate longing to avoid adulthood and outward appearance of normality that underscore the horror of his deeds.
Rating: R18 - Contains violence, sexual themes and content that may disturb
