 Our programmers have sought out the best feature films, documentaries and video for this year's festival. We previewed over 400 films and we're excited about the excellent quality and range of this year's offering, which includes more lesbian features than we've ever screened before and wonderful films like Lan Yu and Burnt Money that we've been pursuing for two years!

VictimWe're especially happy this year to be bringing back to the big screen in New Zealand one of the treasures of 20th century queer cinema - Basil Dearden's exceptional thriller Victim. We intend to make retrospective screenings an annual feature of Out Takes, and the British Council has helped us to a great start by supporting this screening of Victim. 2004 will be the tenth Out Takes festival since we started in Wellington in 1995. That's worth celebrating! So let us know which queer films from years past you'd most like to see at Out Takes 2004.

The friendly staff at the Paramount Theatre are very welcoming of Out Takes and we're very pleased to be working with them again as our sole venue this year.

The Reel Queer team also welcome our visitor, Joan Nestle - lesbian icon and subject of the excellent documentary Hand On The Pulse. Joan's visit is being supported by DOODS.

Reel Queer is an incorporated society run on a non-profit basis by volunteers from the queer community. The censorship difficulties experienced by other local film festivals last year have reminded us of the importance of our objects, not least of which is to bring to New Zealand screens positive and challenging images that reflect the diversity of our lives and culture.
