 L.I.E.

Dir: Michael Cuesta, USA, 2001, 35mm, 94 mins

R16 - Contains violence, offensive language & sex scenes

Critically acclaimed and winner of numerous awards at film festivals - including the Grand Jury Award at Los Angeles' Outfest - L.I.E. is powerful, remarkable and a stunning feature film debut for its director, Michael Cuesta (Six Feet Under).

L.I.E.Teenage Howie (Paul Franklin Dano) is still mourning the death of his mother in a fiery car crash on the Long Island Expressway. Neglected by his womanising father, Howie turns his attention to his delinquent friends. In particular, he places his affections on his best pal Gary, who, unbeknown to Howie, turns tricks for local men. Dreaming of escape, Gary and Howie determine to run away to California. For cash they rob houses, including that of 'Big John' - an ex-Marine and local identity, who also happens to be one of Gary's regulars. Howie is stranded in suburbia however when Gary unexpectedly heads West alone. As Big John (superbly played by Brian Cox - Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter) seeks out Howie's company we become increasingly uncomfortable about Big John's intentions.

L.I.E. features uniformly excellent performances (from Dano and Cox in particular) and exemplifies filmmaking at its best. The relationship between Howie and Big John at the heart of L.I.E. is sure to provoke discussion.

'L.I.E is superior and original filmmaking… One of the year's most impressive films… You won't be able to take your eyes off it' - Jay Carr, Boston Globe

'Mr Cox delivers an indelible performance' - Dave Kehr, New York Times

'Experience one of the most profoundly moving motion pictures of the year' - Rex Reed, NY Observer

Winner of two Independent Spirit awards, 2002 Sundance Film Festival
