Set in Beijing in the late 80s, Lan Yu depicts an affair between slick entrepreneur Handong and Lan Yu, a young student in need of money. Seeking benefactors at a local gay bar, Lan Yu meets Handong who takes him home for a night of passion. What starts off as a purely commercial encounter becomes more serious - Lan Yu's feelings run much deeper, but there are complications. Handong likes to get around, and he's succumbing to the social pressure to marry and have children. And just around the corner, one of the darkest chapters of China's history is about to erupt in Tiananmen Square. Based on China's first internet porn novel, Beijing Story, this is a rare and assured vision of contemporary homosexuality in China.
