 HAND ON THE PULSE

Dir: Joyce Warshow, USA, 2002, Beta SP, 52 mins

No rating required

This documentary follows the life of Joan Nestle, a Bronx-born Jewish 62 year old femme lesbian who came out in the working class bars of Greenwich Village in the late 1950s. Co-founder of the Lesbian Herstory Archives in NYC and a truly inspirational figure, she played an invaluable role in reclaiming the history of lesbian lives in the 50s and 60s. In so doing, she gave dignity back to the butch-femme couples whose gender roles had been so comprehensively dismissed by 1970s lesbian feminists.
