 GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER

Dir: Maja Weiss, Slovenia, 2001, 35mm, 100 mins, Slovenian with English subtitles

R16 - Contains offensive language & sexual themes

This genuinely suspenseful film - the first Slovenian movie directed by a woman - is a tale of friendship, freedom and sexual awakening. Guardian Of The Frontier When three friends from college, Alja, Zana and Simona decide to spend the summer break canoeing down the Kolpa River - a lush verdant waterway which separates Slovenia and Croatia - they find themselves pushing up against various boundaries: the borders between countries; the clash between urban and rural values and the tension between what's permissable and what's forbidden. As the girls float deeper into the woods their carefree adventure takes some unexpected twists and turns. They encounter a mysterious cast of characters including the menacing guardian of the frontier - a self-defined defender of traditional Slovenian values.

Guardians Of The FrontierAs Zana and Alja become more physically intimate the straight-laced Simona is drawn to the guardian and all that he stands for. Nationalistic and personal passions lead to an explosive climax which highlights the complex borders affecting young women coming of age in a transitioning Eastern Europe.

Captivating in its beauty and in the beauty of its three female stars, Guardian Of The Frontier is both a political and psychological drama, pitting three young women against the elements and their own inner beasts. (Reel Pride 2002)
